PVS Rotary is supporting the Mar Vista Family Center (https://marvistafc.org/) for food distribution every Wednesday. From 8:45 AM to 10:30 AM at least three volunteers from our club will be needed to help Lucia and the rest of the volunteers 1) Unload the food truck 2) Classify boxes of food 3) Set up each table with a volunteer or two to hand out boxes. Every week 75 to 100 boxes of food get distributed right in our neighborhood! Families start to line up for this food distribution around 5 AM. Our community is so grateful for what the Mar Vista Family Center provides. And of course, our generous club is right there to help out. We are looking for support currently for all the Wednesdays in October, November, and December. Can you help? Please contact Jamie and her know which Wednesday or Wednesdays could work for you. It’s heartwarming to know how we contribute to feeding people and keeping families above water during these tough times. Thank you! |

Teacher Mini-Grants is one of the largest and most successful program of the Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club. The program is over 20 years old and made in a joint effort with the LAX Coastal Chamber of Commerce. Approximately 75 Mini-Grants are awarded each year to local area classroom teachers totaling $15,000 to $20,000. The Grants ranging from $75 to $400 are awarded to deserving educators to fund their creative and innovative projects in the classrooms. The principals of the winning schools are invited to an awards event held annually to receive the grant checks for their respective schools. Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is very proud of having distributed more than $300,000 to local schools over the years. As significant attendance and guests (and awards) are anticipated for this meeting, we will expedite and shorten our announcements for this week, so that the Teacher Mini-Grants program will have ample time. I highly encourage everyone to attend, to not only support our teachers and club, but to also get a firsthand view of what our teachers need, how the mini-grants will be used, and the impact to our community and students. If you have any questions, please contact the program chair, Gwen Vuchsas. (gvuchsas@secoteam.com)

Jan. 29, 2021
Earlier in 2020, our club members baked or bought dozens of cookies, and donated such treats to clients of the Westside Pacific Villages (WPV). WPV generously supports and serves seniors in our community, especially those who are now homebound due to the pandemic. One of WPV’s many programs is the weekly deliveries of meals and other resources to the senior community. The cookies donated by PVS Rotarians and included with the WPV deliveries last time was a success. As such, we are doing it again! We are calling all bakers who would like to help. Under the direction and leadership of Bobbie Casalino-Lewis, the goal is to delivery 210 bags of cookies in total – for distribution on Friday 1/29/2021. Please contact or call Bobbie ASAP if you are interested, and so she can plan and coordinate: bobbiecasalinolewis@gmail.com . |

Apr. 16, 2021 3:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.
Every year, MVFC holds a community Literacy Fair that encourages children and students to read and learn. Children of all ages can drop by the center on a Saturday, to pick up free books to read, make crafts, listen to guests read stories, and their families can socialize and learn more about local resources, while also enjoying lunch and listening to jazz band. However, in light of the ongoing pandemic, unfortunately MVFC had to adjust this event this year. We have supported this event the past few years. On Friday April 16, 2021 at 4:00pm – MVFC and its sponsors, Echoes of Hope, ABC 7, and Disney have provided meals and books to give away during the event. MVFC is requesting at least 4 PVS Rotarian Volunteers to help set up, and pass out bags of books to children and family during the event! If you are interested and can volunteer, please e-mail me at jjenrotary@gmail.com and copy Lucia Diaz at ldiaz@marvistafc.org ASAP. You will need to arrive around 3:30pm to help set up. In partnership with the Ballona Creek Renaissance, the Culver City Interact Club, Rotary Club of Culver City, and Rotary Club of Inglewood, we are looking for volunteers to help keep our local streets clean, as upcoming storms and weather wash the trash and debris on our local street into the watershed, waterways, and ocean –contaminating the habitat, while also bringing harm to the wildlife. We will help Ballona Creek Renaissance pass out buckets and gloves to the community (so they can use this to clean up) at three (3) pre-designated sites, and will also be participating in cleaning up. Playa Venice Sunrise Rotarians have been assigned the area in from Mar Vista Family Center on 5075 S. Slauson Avenue. Come join us this Saturday on April 17, 2021 from 9:00am to Noon, as we will do our part to keep the neighborhood clean of debris and trash. Don’t forget to put on some sunscreen, wear your Rotary gear and Face masks! Please email me at jjenrotary@gmail.com to RSVP. |

Ending the Pandemic with UNICEF
May 12, 2021 8:00 a.m.
Bridget Maxim, Manager of Philanthropic Partnerships at UNICEF will be joining us to speak about how ending the pandemic with UNICEF. UNICEF, as the largest single vaccine buyer in the world, and the organization that has vaccinated 45% of the world’s children, has been chosen to activate our robust infrastructure to procure and distribute over 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines equitably around the globe through the COVAX facility. COVAX is ensuring that 92 low and middle-income countries have equitable access to COVID vaccines regardless of the ability to pay for them. This is the largest humanitarian response any organization has ever undertaken, and UNICEF is working around the clock as vaccines touch down in more countries each day. We are calling on partners to join us in putting an end to the pandemic, for all. Bridget Maxim has a background in education, business and fundraising. Her career began as a middle school science teacher, an experience that shaped her deep rooted passion for children’s rights. She then worked at the National Geographic Society and the USC Viterbi School of Engineering to raise critical funds that progressed science and enhanced our understanding of the world. Her desire to make the world a better place for future generations and children then led her to her current role at UNICEF USA where she is Manager of Philanthropic Partnerships, including UNICEF USA’s partnership for children with disabilities with Special Olympics International. Bridget holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geological Sciences and an MBA from USC as well as a Master’s in Education from the University of Missouri - St. Louis. |
